Master Thesis: Chemical mechanical polishing optimization
Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) is a process employed in MEMS manufacturing to planarize thin films. It is employed to reduce film thickness variation over a surface, to improve related processes, for example, wafer bonding. The dynamics of this system is governed by a set of variables, such as pressure, processing time, polishing slurry and type of silicon oxide. Pressure is applied unevenly throughout the wafer to obtain a uniform oxide surface.
Research plan:
The conducted research is divided into main subtopics:
- Bibliography analysis and comprehension of the mechanical system;
- Data gathering from experimental runs;
- Elaboration of scripts in Python for data analysis;
- Quantify direct influence of parameters for polishing process and thickness variation;
- Model and solve equations of motion for the polished oxide surface;
- Adapt and improve the Python codes with the obtained results.
The research is focused on the investigation of improvement of surface planarization, using concepts of dynamical systems, such as the least-action principle and entropy. Through the minimization of a chosen classical quantity, the values for parameters will be obtained such as to improve plane oxide distribution. Python Programming Language will be the main tool to develop coding and perform computations of cross- and auto-correlation functions in accordance to the experimental parameters.
